People with some type of food allergy or intolerance should always be vigilant and very attentive to the nutritional components of what they eat. This, as a general rule, is not a great difficulty since, today, most products contain specific and explanatory labels about their ingredients. The problem comes when the typical meals and desserts of a certain time of year arrive. For example, Easter and French toast. Can a celiac eat French toast?
Gluten intolerant people have difficulty digesting this protein that is accompanied by damage to the intestine each time it is consumed. Gluten is present in wheat, barley or oats, for example, although there are many foods that can also contain it.
When this pathology is diagnosed, there is a solution (that does not cure) for it and that is to follow a gluten-free diet for life. Luckily, today, there are usually not so many problems to follow it, since restaurants and bars have the obligation to offer a gluten-free alternative for these people.
In addition, there are a multitude of ideas and recipes that allow us to adapt and prepare traditional dishes, alternating ingredients that celiacs can consume, so that everyone can eat everything. This is the case of the French toast that we are going to teach you how to make in this article. Because YES, celiacs can also eat French toast and, in the end, that is the important thing, that we can all sit down and enjoy a tradition as delicious as this.
If you want to make some delicious gluten-free French toast for celiacs for this Easter, here is a VERY easy recipe! Take note, grab your apron and get to work!
Exquisite and quick gluten-free French toast recipe
As you can imagine, what should be taken into account when preparing gluten-free French toast is the bread that is going to be chosen to make them. Therein lies the difference between normal French toast and ‘gluten-free’ ones. Conclusion? For celiacs we must ALWAYS choose a gluten-free bread. Of course, it can be a bar that we have left to harden a bit or sliced bread.
What ingredients do we need to make French toast for celiacs?
- Gluten-free bread
- 1 and ½ l. milk
- 40 gr. sugar or honey, (if you prefer)
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- Gluten FREE Cinnamon Powder
- Lemon and orange peels
- Eggs
- Olive oil
Step by step preparation:
- To begin with, heat the milk with the sugar (or honey, whatever you have chosen), the cinnamon sticks and the lemon and orange peels in a saucepan. Let it boil for about 15 minutes over medium heat.
- Meanwhile, we are placing our gluten-free bread on a tray, which we have previously cut into slices of different sizes. The tray has to be high enough to hold a few centimeters of liquid, since later we will pour our milk mixture into it, with the aim of soaking the bread well.
- Add the milk and let it rest for a while. So that the French toast remains very juicy, you can try turning them around so that they are well soaked on both sides. Of course, be very careful not to break them!
- Next, we beat the eggs and pass the slices of bread one by one through the beaten egg and then fry them in hot oil until they are golden brown. In a separate plate we will add a mixture of cinnamon powder and sugar. Careful! Powdered cinnamon usually contains gluten, so you should read the ingredients carefully and make sure that the one you have bought (or have at home) does not contain.
- To finish, we will coat the French toast fresh out of the pan in that final mixture and later, we will only have to enjoy them and share them with whoever we want the most. Because… these French toast are suitable for celiacs, but also for non-celiacs. Yum! Enjoy the most delicious dessert of all Easter!
